Princeville Resort
5520 Ka Haku Road

The 251-room Princeville Resort is considered by many to be the premier luxury option in Hawaii, and given the stunning setting overlooking Hanalei Bay, it's hard to disagree. Guests can expect warm, sophisticated decor, suites with personal butler service, world-class golf, and a memorable breakfast buffet on a terrace with gorgeous ocean views. The discerning clientele this resort attracts will find little to fault, though if one had to nitpick, the formal dress code might not appeal to everyone, and food prices -- as one might expect at this caliber of property -- are steep. The location on Kauai's lush, ruggedly beautiful northern coast makes for natural beauty that's unparalleled, but rain is more frequent here and the beach, though lovely, doesn't have the finest sand.

The Westin Princeville Ocean Resort Villas
3838 Wyllie Road

The 346-room Westin Princeville's condo-style time-share units, four beautiful pools, expansive cliffside grounds, and excellent service (for a condo property) make it a solid, quiet option for families and couples. However, there's no on-site beach, better rooms can be found elsewhere, and restaurant options are limited.

Hanalei Bay Resort
5380 Honoiki Road

Hanalei Bay Resort is a 134-room time-share property that offers mid-range nightly rates in one of Kauai’s ritziest resort communities. As its name implies, Hanalei Bay Resort is perched above the famed north shore outpost, and offers stunning views of the nearby mountains. Simple Hawaiian decor can be found throughout the property, and while the stone and koa wood finishes in the lobby make for a stunning space, decor falls short in the bland guest rooms. There are multiple tennis courts, two outdoor pools, and a barbecue area, but the hotel’s time-share nature means hands-off service. From the guest rooms, it’s a long walk down a steep path to the beach, and the hotel doesn’t provide beach chairs, so you’ll need to bring your own. Still, it's a good value for the stunning setting; prices at the more luxurious St. Regis Princeville right next door are nearly triple.

Ali'i Kai Resort
3830 Edward Rd

The three-pearl, 18-room Ali’i Kai is a quiet condo resort surrounded by tropical gardens in Princeville. The spacious two-bedroom apartments have full kitchens, plus mountain and ocean views from private lanais, but lack air-conditioning. There's also no direct beach access, and the nearest beach is Hideaways Beach, which is a six-minute drive west of the resort (and requires a hike down a steep, rocky trail). There's also a shopping center with restaurants and a grocery store nearby. Features at the property are slim, and limited to a large pool, barbecue grills, a hot tub, and smaller children's pool. Travelers looking for a more lively place with a restaurant might want to consider the nearby Hanalei Bay Resort, where rates are comparable.

Marc at Princeville Pali Ke Kua
5454 Ka Haku Rd, Suite C

Each of the 106 one- and two-bedroom condos at the three-pearl Pali Ke Kua is privately owned, so the quality can vary. That fact aside, the property sits right next to the path to Hideaways Beach, which is the only beach in Princeville, and its spacious condos make it a popular choice. Pali Ke Kua is the only condo development in Princeville with its own restaurant -- Hideaways Pizza -- which is open for dinner. Next to the restaurant is a simple pool area with a hot tub. The complex is best for self-caterers, and is also a fine spot for whale watching in the winter. Travelers looking for a more lively resort setting should consider the larger Hanalei Bay Resort, which has more features, but is slightly cheaper.

Wailea Beach Resort - Marriott, Maui
3700 Wailea Alanui Drive

After a top-to-bottom $100 million renovation in 2016, the four-pearl Wailea Beach Resort - Marriott, Maui feels like a new property. The hotel’s 547 guest rooms are housed in low-rise buildings spread across the well manicured property. They’re decorated with sleek furnishings and are stocked with nice amenities like Nespresso machines and flat-screen TVs. Four pools and a water park cater to all kinds of travelers, and varied dining options keep the food scene interesting. Additional amenities include a spa, fitness center, family game room, and a small movie theater, but the biggest disappointment is the resort’s indirect access to Wailea Beach. Though it’s an oceanfront property, there is, ironically, no beach in front of the Wailea Beach Resort. Guests must walk to the nearby Grand Wailea in order to access the sand. Travelers looking for a truly beachfront property may prefer Marriott’s Maui Ocean Club, though it isn’t as upscale.

Fairmont Kea Lani, Maui
4100 Wailea Alanui Dr

Wailea's aptly named Fairmont Kea Lani is a "white heaven" indeed -- its 450 units sit on a 22-acre beachfront property that includes three outdoor pools -- one with a waterslide and another adults-only -- multiple  restaurants and bars, a luxurious spa, and access to world-class golf. Unlike its competitors, this property does an excellent job of keeping both couples and families happy without the long lines and battles for sun loungers by the pool. Oceanfront villas and suites are some of the largest in Maui, and all are equipped with flat-screen TVs, living spaces, marble bathrooms with separate tubs and showers, and furnished outdoor spaces. A 24-hour fitness center, daily activities, and wedding services round out features. A pricey daily resort fee (typical for Hawaii) covers self-parking, Wi-Fi, and snorkeling gear. Young couples may prefer the Andaz Maui at Wailea Resort, a trendy property with cascading pools.

Ho'olei at Grand Wailea
146 Hoolei Cir

The Ho’olei at Grand Wailea offers luxury condos on a beautiful, relaxed property connected to the Grand Wailea, one of Maui’s most impressive mega-resorts. In huge villas that average 3,500 square feet, families will find all the comforts of a luxury home, including a decked-out kitchen, walk-in closets, a spacious lanai, a garage, and an elevator. While the property has its own lovely pool and fitness room, guests can access the main resort’s elaborate maze of pools and waterslides, enormous fitness center, and other activities. It’s perfect for visitors who want all the features of the Grand Wailea, but with a more peaceful atmosphere and more spacious accommodations.

Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea
3900 Wailea Alanui Drive

Situated on beautiful Wailea Beach, the Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea established itself as one of Hawaii’s premier luxury resorts when it opened in 1990. Today, after a multi-million-dollar renovation in 2016, the 383-room oceanfront stunner still maintains its elite status and doesn't charge a resort fee (a rarity for Hawaii). Modern guest rooms are spacious and sumptuously outfitted with bathtubs, separate showers, and luxe amenities. Three restaurants provide varied dining options, and Wolfgang Puck’s acclaimed Spago is one of Maui’s best eateries. Families and couples are equally catered to here with two family-friendly pools, a game room, free kids' club, secluded adults-only oasis pool, and a world-class spa. However, some couples or solo travelers may find the hotel to be a bit too family-friendly. Travelers looking for a more hip, adults-centric property may prefer the Andaz Maui at Wailea Hotel.

Wailea Ekahi Village
3300 Wailea Alanui Dr, Check in address 34 Wailea Gateway Place, Suite A102

This massive 294-unit condo resort is spread out over a nicely maintained 34-acre tropical property alongside a lovely beach in Wailea. While part of the property extends down to the ocean, most of the condos are set back a bit inland, and it can be a 10-minute walk to reach the beach from the farthest units. These level of updating in these mid-range condos varies from unit to unit, and though they are smaller and a bit older than those at neighboring Elua Village, they're also at a slightly lower price point. All in all, they're a good value for this upscale neighborhood.
