Le Pavillon de la Reine

The luxury Pavillon de la Reine sits back from the arcaded galleries, shops, and cafes on the Place de Vosges, in the heart of the Marais district. Dating from the 17th century, the hotel is privately owned and family operated, and, with its private courtyard and garden, evokes the atmosphere of a private home. The 54 elegant rooms, including suites with separate living areas, range from classic to contemporary, and all come with iPod docks, Nespresso machines, and rainfall showers. There's no full restaurant, but guests can help themselves to drinks and snacks at an honesty bar in a lounge beside wood-burning fireplaces. Breakfast is available, and guests can take it outside on the courtyard terrace when weather permits. The hotel has a luxurious spa with a steam bath and a hot tub, and it rents bikes and iPads at no extra charge. It also offers free on-site parking, a true rarity in Paris. While there's nothing quite like this hotel in the Marais, travelers could also consider La Clef Louvre in the 1st Arrondissement, which is just as elegant and similarly priced.

Generator Paris

Transformed from an office building, the Generator Paris is a chic and funky hostel located in Paris's hip 10th Arrondissement. The characterful property houses a whopping 916 beds arranged around small dormitories and private rooms, all clean and contemporary -- though with sparse amenities. With a cafe, Moroccan-themed chill-out lounge, and bars in both the basement and on the rooftop terrace, there's no shortage of space to relax and mingle, though non-guests will find it hard to get past security. While the location is a little far from most tourist attractions, for stylish and funky lodgings close to Metro and Eurostar transport links, this place is a budget-category winner.

Hotel Paris Villette

The Hotel Paris Villette is a 43-room budget hotel located in the 19th Arrondissement, about 30 minutes from the city's main sights by metro. The property is in a scruffy neighborhood close to a metro station and Villette Park, home to the city's major science and technology museum. Rooms are small and basic, but they do have a nice dash of style for a two-pearl property and come with flat-screen TVs and free Wi-Fi. A continental breakfast is available for a small fee, and guests can use the computers in the lobby, but that's about it for amenities. Travelers looking for a value hotel closer to the action should check out the quirky Tiquetonne, which is located on a hip street right in the heart of Paris' sights with lower rates.

Hotel Edouard VI

Hotel Edouard VI, located in Paris's 6th Arrondissement in Montparnasse, offers a solid Left Bank three-pearl value with proximity to several Metro lines and Luxembourg Gardens. The 33 rooms are decorated with a well-executed medieval twist that's befitting to the 19th-century Haussmann building. Standard rooms have traditional furnishings with details to give design oomph and some higher-end rooms have been transformed into modern, attractive units with posh bathrooms. Free Wi-Fi throughout and the buffet breakfast (for a fee) are perks, but there's no full-restaurant, bar, or business center. For better amenities, consider Holiday Inn Paris-St. Germain Des Pres, but rates that are a touch higher.

Hotel Saint-Honore

Hotel Saint-Honore is a budget-minded property with an excellent 1st arrondissement location, near the Louvre, Les Halles, Le Marais, and many metro lines. There aren’t many extra features, though continental breakfast is available (for a fee). The hotel’s 24 very compact rooms have flat-screen TVs, safes, and free tea (no coffee). In the rooms and throughout the hotel, furnishings look dated and even a little worn. It’s hard to beat the location, but it’s still wise to comparison-shop with other budget spots; the rooms at Best Western Premier Louvre Saint Honore are far more stylish, better-equipped (there are Nespresso machines in all), and in the same price range.

Le Meurice

From its luxurious Louis XVI decor to its Michelin-starred restaurant, Le Meurice feels fit for royalty. The regal five-pearl hotel is situated directly across from the Tuileries Garden and is a short walk to several attractions including the Louvre. Rooms are spacious and feature lavish decor with period furniture, modern amenities, and palatial en-suite marble bathrooms with a separate tub and shower. The hotel also features an elegantly eccentric Dali Restaurant (he was a frequent guest of the hotel), a cosy bar, a spa, a small fitness center, and a large banquet venue. Rates are exorbitant, however, and fees for Wi-Fi use in common areas as well as a pricey breakfast only add to the expense. Travelers might also want to consider the W Paris - Opera hotel, another five-pearl property in the heart of Paris with eclectic modern decor.

Hotel Lutetia

The Hotel Lutetia is the most magnificent luxury hotel in Left Bank Paris. The sprawling historic property -- in all of its Art Nouveau/Art Deco glory -- is set in the heart of the glamorous Saint Germain-des-Pres. Originally opened in 1910, the Jazz-era property reopened in 2018 after a four-year, full-scale renovation. Lutetia now offers 184 (down from 233) fully soundproofed rooms, each one with custom 1930s-style furnishings and solid marble bathrooms. Dining options include an all-day salon set under a historic skylit; a Mediterranean-inspired brasserie, overseen by a Michelin-starred chef; and 24-hour room service. Le Bar Josephine is a musn't-miss for its cocktails, live jazz, and incredible fresco, painstakingly restored during the 2014-2018 renovation. The gorgeous Spa Akasha features a 56-foot mosaic pool, and there are several grand salons for special events. Hotel Lutetia is the only luxury hotel in its class on the Left Bank -- for a classic Saint Germain stay that's more cozy and charming than grand, look into Hotel d'Aubusson.

Hotel Monterosa - Astotel
30 rue la Bruyere 9th Arr.

Hotel Monterosa is a small 36-room hotel, with its larger sister property, Joyce Hotel, just across the street. It is located on a small street in the 9th arrondissement that is lined with a number of restaurants and cafes. Breakfast is available for a fee in the bright, modern cafe area on the ground floor. The rooms are pleasantly decorated with red accents, wall-mounted flat-screen TVs, and electric kettles, though space is on the small side.  An alternative is Hotel Villathena, which offers similar pricing and is just a few blocks away.

Hôtel Concorde Montparnasse
40 Rue du Commandant Rene Mouchotte Place de Catalogne

The mid-range Hotel Concorde Montparnasse is a large hotel with modern facilities that draws couples and business travelers. Its 354 rooms are spacious, if a touch generic and dated, and include minibars, flat-screen TVs, and roomy bathrooms. Two restaurants and a bar with occasional live music round out the facilities, while meeting rooms and a business center make it convenient for business travelers. Another key highlight for those travelers is the location, in the business district, a short walk to the train station. But those looking for rooms with more Parisian style could consider the Hotel Palm Opera, another mid-range hotel with far more flair.

Hotel des Bains

The Hotel des Bains is a 42-room boutique hotel with a charming courtyard and eclectic furnishings in the 14th Arrondissement of Paris. Just south of the Boulevard Montparnasse and within a five-minute walk to three different metro lines, the budget property is on a bustling street of bars, restaurants, shops, and many other small hotels. Its location and relatively modest price are key features as the hotel itself is more comfortable than cosmopolitan in design. Some of the rooms face a blank masonry wall, while fifth-floor rooms have balconies, and other rooms face the rooftops of the Montparnasse, a Paris neighborhoods synonymous with the 1920s and 1930s and that era's legendary artists: Cocteau, Hemingway, and Picasso. For a budget property with a more youthful vibe, guests could try the Hotel Beaumarchais near Le Marais.
