Emerald Grande at HarborWalk Village
10 Harbor Blvd

The massive Emerald Grande at HarborWalk Village is a significant presence in the Destin skyline. It's perched above the shopping, dining, and entertainment destination HarborWalk Village, and offers great views of Destin Harbor. Spacious condos have balconies, full kitchens, and laundry facilities -- attracting families looking for space -- but decor can vary widely between units. Perks include a funky-shaped outdoor pool, well-equipped fitness center, and free Wi-Fi, but there is a mandatory resort fee and some guests complain of nightly noise from HarborWalk village.

Henderson Park Inn
2700 Scenic Hwy 98 East

Located in Destin, Henderson Park Inn is a 35-room upscale boutique hotel that’s known for its romantic appeal (only adults 25 and older are allowed), impeccable service, and all-inclusive amenities like free welcome drinks, breakfast, lunch, and happy hour. Rooms are luxurious, and many have views overlooking the beach and the Gulf of Mexico.

Holiday Inn Express Destin E - Commons Mall Area
108 Hutchinson St

The 74-room Holiday Inn Express Destin E - Commons Mall Area offers a value-priced vacation in walking distance to shopping and the beach. Guest rooms are clean and modern, with microwaves and mini-fridges, and suites with fold-out couches and wet bars are available. The property also offers an outdoor pool, a small gym, and free continental breakfast with cinnamon rolls. However, rooms don’t have balconies or inspiring views. The Fairfield Inn & Suites Destin has rooms with balconies and beach views.

Days Inn by Wyndham Destin
1029 Highway 98 E

The Days Inn Destin is a dated, 60-room budget hotel across the highway from the beach and close to Henderson Beach State Park. Although the beach feels nearby, getting there requires crossing an often busy highway. Guest rooms have mini-fridges and microwaves, and some offer kitchenettes or jetted tubs, but many rooms need updates and better housekeeping. The property offers a basic outdoor pool and free continental breakfast, but nothing is particularly impressive here. An alternative choice may be the more modern Holiday Inn Express Destin E. - Commons Mall Area, which is closer to the beach.

Destin Inn & Suites
713 Harbor Blvd

The Destin Inn & Suites is a 77-room budget property in the middle of the Destin tourist area, a short drive from the beach and other attractions. Guest rooms have large flat-screen TVs, microwaves, and mini-fridges, but there are often housekeeping and maintenance issues, particularly in bathrooms. The property has an outdoor pool and offers free hot breakfast. An alternative option maybe Wingate by Wyndham Destin FL, which has a fitness center and hot tub, as well as suites.

Sundestin Beach Resort
1040 Hwy 98 E

Sundestin Beach Resort is a mid-range, beachfront property with one-, two-, and three-bedroom condo units. Amenities include an indoor and outdoor pool, and kids' splash pad. Some nearby condo properties have bigger pools, but the Sundestin Beach Resort stands out for its on-site restaurant and bar, and gift shop with a coffee counter. The 316 rooms have full kitchens, and some have balconies with gulf views, but as is often the case with condo properties, decor varies and some units are more up to date than others. Travelers may want to compare rates with the Holiday Surf & Racquet Club, which, although it has fewer amenities, has direct beach access and rooms with screened-in balconies.

Destin Gulfgate
1180 Scenic Highway 98

The three-pearl Destin Gulfgate's condos are the closest thing travelers can get to an apartment steps away from the ocean. Restaurants and shops are within shopping distance, while family and nature attractions are a 10-minute (or fewer) drive away. The 45 condos sleep up to eight and have laundry facilities, plus self-catering is easy thanks to well-stocked kitchens and nearby grocery stores. While all have balconies with ocean views, some are more old-fashioned than others. The property is light on features, but there are a small outdoor pool, free beachfront loungers, and a modern gym. This is an excellent options for families, but couples may prefer the adult-only Henderson Park Inn, which comes with free meals and an on-site restaurant.

Village Inn of Destin
215 US Highway 98 East

Deauville Beach Resort
North Beach Miami Beach

Offering a good-size room with a panoramic view, quality beds, and beach access at a reasonable price -- the Deauville seems like a decent pick, but frequent complaints of cleanliness issues and poor customer service have us looking elsewhere. The rooms renovated in 2014 have a fresh look, but still left much to be desired and the entire property is due for a overhaul. For a similarly priced option with better rooms and service, check out the Courtyard By Marriott Miami Beach Oceanfront.

Palmeiras Beach Club at Grove Isle
4 Grove Isle Drive Coconut Grove Miami

Isolated on its own, 20-acre island off the coast of funky Coconut Grove, the Grove Isle offers big rooms (each with a balcony and a stunning view), a spa, 12 tennis courts, an open-air restaurant, a superb fitness center, and a marina. But there's no beach, just a patch of sand on some concrete by the pool, some rooms and public areas need updating, and the remote location means there's not a lot to do (an upside for those in search of tranquility).
