Viva Wyndham Dominicus Palace
Bayahibe 23000 Dominican Republic

This 330-room mid-range resort for all ages attracts a European crowd (expect to hear Spanish and Italian) and has about half the number of rooms as its sister property next door. Fewer guests, expansive grounds, and full access to features at both resorts make this the slightly higher-priced option. The rooms are nothing to write home about, but have been upgraded with white comforters and flat-screen TVs; bathrooms have either tub/shower combos or walk-in showers with removable nozzles and limited toiletries (there's a convenience store on-site for the essentials). Kiddos stay busy with shallow swimming on the beach, a children's pool, and kids' zone next door. There are limited reservations for a la carte restaurants, but a late-night wood-fire pizzeria stays open all night.

Viva Wyndham Dominicus Beach
La Romana 23000 Dominican Republic

This family-friendly, 613-room all-inclusive resort has a mostly European clientele. Basic rooms have received a slight refresh (no more patterned bedspreads), and the limited all-inclusive amenities help keep prices low. Three pools, trapeze lessons, and tennis are available, but most guests flock to the beach. For drinks, guests will have to take turns standing in line to get small pours in plastic cups, and repeat the process until the (beautiful) sunset. Food is not a highlight: there’s a limit on a la carte reservations, and the main buffet seems to have a crowd at all times. Overall, though, this is an affordable choice for families. Romantics should consider the VIP upgrade.

Hotel Bayahibe
Calle Juan Brito 37, Bayahibe 23000 Dominican Republic

Two-pearl Hotel Bayahibe is in central Bayahibe, a five-minute walk (or less) from the town’s shops, happening restaurants, and waterfront bars. The 25 identically bright rooms have surprisingly decent amenities including air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs, and mini-fridges, though the look is dated and bathrooms need an update. The small balconies attached to some even provide limited sea views. Beyond the reasonably pleasant rooms, however, this simple property doesn't offer much in the way of socializing or activities (there's no pool, restaurant, or bar). A free breakfast at a nearby restaurant is included, adding a little value to a stay here. For a bit more money, Cabana Elke has a more lively vibe plus a sparkling outdoor pool and an open-air Italian restaurant/bar that’s always buzzing with locals.

CHIC by Royalton Luxury Resorts
Carretera Uvero Alto-Punta Cana

CHIC by Royalton Luxury Resorts is a 323-room upscale all-inclusive with contemporary decor and a happening vibe. Opened in December of 2014, this adult-only property is quickly becoming one of Punta Cana’s most sought-after spots, thanks to its ultra-modern rooms, varied on-site dining options, and beautiful pool and beach facilities. Amenities such as an on-site spa, a small fitness center, and free Wi-Fi throughout also make CHIC an attractive option. Guests who upgrade to the Diamond Club will be treated to premium drinks and exclusive beach and pool access — but otherwise it’s not worth the extra nightly cost. Though this is by no means a spring break type of place, loud music and lively poolside activities are part of the scene here, so guests looking for more quiet might prefer slightly pricier Sanctuary Cap Cana.

Le Sivory Punta Cana By PortBlue Boutique
Carretera Uvero Alto, Playa Sivory

One of the few boutique luxury hotels in Punta Cana, the luxury Le Sivory is a quiet, adults-only all-inclusive property situated in a secluded beachfront location, a (bumpy) 50-minute ride from the airport. The 55 rooms here are large and chic, all with terraces or patios (some with hot tubs or private pools) and swish bathrooms. There are four dining options here ranging from stellar gourmet fare to a casual open-air restaurant overlooking the beach. Other features include a beautiful pool, spa, and fitness facilities, as well as a beach that's free of both hawkers and throngs of tourists. Travelers with kids will have to look elsewhere, and may find it worthwhile to compare rates with the nearby Zoetry Agua Punta Cana, which is arguably more luxurious but allows children.

Nickelodeon Hotels & Resorts Punta Cana
Carretera Uvero Alto, Parcela No. 214

The four-and-a-half-pearl Nickelodeon Hotels & Resorts Punta Cana is the area’s brightest and quirkiest family-centric all-inclusive resort. Kids and parents who grew up with the in-your-face cable network will immediately recognize its signature bright orange motif and blimp figurines. But, decor manages to look more luxuriously modern than tacky. Features here are outrageously fun: a huge water park, character breakfasts, and daily lottery to get slimed. Parents can drop their kids at Just Kidding for supervised activities, and then relax at the adult-only pool and spa. All 208 bold rooms feature kid-centric amenities and optional swim-up access. One luxe villa is shaped like SpongeBob's under-the-sea pineapple home. The major downside is that the ocean is often too rough for kids to swim. For lower rates, the Family Club at Barceló Bávaro Palace Deluxe offers a calmer beach and emphasis on kids' activities.

Excellence El Carmen
Carr Uvero Alto, Uvero Alto, Punta Cana 23000 Dominican Republic

Excellence El Carmen is a luxury adults-only all-inclusive resort that sits along an idyllic beach in Punta Cana’s laid-back Uvero Alto. Its 492 modern suites have elegant interiors plus high-end features like premium liquor bottles and an oversized Jacuzzi for two. Some rooms add semi-private swim-up pools or completely private rooftop pools. Excellence Club upgrades come with private lounge and restaurant access, an exclusive area on the beach, and daily in-room treats. All-inclusive rates cover meals at 14 restaurants (including several a la carte eateries), top-shelf drinks, 24-hour room service, and activities like snorkeling, Spanish lessons, and beach volleyball. Massages and salon services are available at the full-service spa, as is a hydrotherapy circuit, and the excellent gym offers free daily yoga and aerobics classes. For a more classic Caribbean beachfront all-inclusive with similar amenities, rates are comparable at the nearby sister resort Excellence Punta Cana.

Sensatori Resort Punta Cana
Carretera Uvero Alto Parcela No. 214, Uvero Alto, Punta Cana 23002 Dominican Republic

Built in 2016, the four-pearl Sensatori Resort Punta Cana is among Punta Cana’s newest and chicest adult-oriented all-inclusive resorts. The long list of amenities: a semi-private beach, 10 restaurants, several bars, an indoor/outdoor spa, and an open-air theater -- are designed to encourage guests to never leave the grounds. The 252 rooms and suites are bright and bold with Midcentury Modern decor and they come with large flat-screen TVs, swanky bathrooms, and private balconies (with optional ocean views and swim-up layouts). However, unregulated overflow from the neighboring, family-friendly Nickelodeon Hotels & Resorts Punta Cana can put a damper on the otherwise romantic atmosphere and past guests have complained that Premium Rooms aren't worth the upgrade. For slightly higher rates, Excellence Punta Cana offers similar amenities in a sleeker and more sophisticated package -- without any kids in sight (or earshot).

Casa de Campo Resort & Villas
Carretera La Romana - Higuey

The Dominican Republic's classiest, most famous resort since 1974, the Casa de Campo is part of a massive, 7,000-acre resort community that includes three world-renowned golf courses, an immaculate beach, a marina, the quaint "town" of Altos de Chavon, an equestrian center, and numerous other on-site activities. Rooms and suites are upscale and elegant, but the real deal here are the villas, which feature private pools, butlers, and full kitchens. Food is excellent at this family-friendly resort, and the spa offers great treatments. Note that many guests opt for the all-inclusive package, which covers meals, drinks, and activities such as horseback riding. Though the Eden Roc at Cap Cana may offer more luxurious rooms, Casa de Campo certainly offers more activities and some prefer its upscale, yet slightly more laid-back, vibe.
