Occidental Costa Cancun

Occidental Costa Cancun hotel is a three-pearl all-inclusive beachfront property with 358 rooms in Cancun's Hotel Zone. Geared toward families, the resort is situated on a small stretch of beach with turquoise-blue water, palm trees, loungers, and soft white sand. Rooms are simple and dated, though some have sea-view balconies, and dining includes a 24-hour snack bar plus buffet and themed a la carte options. There's a large outdoor pool plus a decent fitness center and a spa with a free "sauna" area. True to its family-friendly ethos, the resort has a lively kids' club plus supervised activities. As an alternative, the Hotel Riu Caribe is nearby and has a more exclusive atmosphere plus a greater array of family- and adult-friendly services, though rates are higher.

Ramada Cancun City
Av. Yaxchilan 41 SM 22

The mid-range Ramada Cancun City is a 101-room property with an outdoor pool, a restaurant, and bar service. Modern and colorful rooms are outfitted with coffeemakers, flat-screen TVs, and safes, but no mini-fridges. Guests are largely couples, but families may also enjoy the kiddy pool and proximity to downtown sites. There's an Executive Floor for business travelers, and hotel services include free Wi-Fi, a conference and event space, and a business center, along with on-site parking. Travelers might want to also consider the similar Hotel Plaza Caribe, which is across from the bus station -- it has lower rates, although some of its rooms are dated.

Las Perlas Condos
Blvd Kukulcan Km 2.5, Zona Hotelera

Set against the backdrop of the beach from which it takes its name, the Imperial Las Perlas Cancun Condos is a budget destination just inside the Cancun Hotel Zone, in between downtown and the area's tourist heart. The beach isn't one of Cancun's nicer stretches and the sand isn't powdery, but staff works hard to remove the seaweed that washes ashore. The age of the hotel shows in sagging wooden balconies, trim, and water-damaged paint on the exterior, and missing grout, peeling paint, and dated amenities inside. Many of the rooms feature seaside or lagoon views, but not all of them do. Cancun Bay Resort and Casa Maya Cancun are better beachfront picks for not too much more money.

Casa Margarita Hotel Boutique

The five-room, upscale Casa Margarita Hotel Boutique is more like a Mediterranean villa than a hotel -- which makes sense, considering it used to be a private residence. It is well-suited to couples, and offers a quiet atmosphere and personalized service. All rooms feature big bathrooms with separate whirlpool tubs and showers. The chic infinity-edge pool and whirlpool overlook Nichupte Lagoon. The location in the Pok-ta-Pok residential and golf development is quiet, and about a 10-minute drive from the convention center and main beaches. Those who prefer a beachfront location in the heart of the Hotel Zone should consider Casa Turquesa, though its rooms aren't as nice.

Hotel Faranda Dos Playas

Guests that can overlook the bland, outdated rooms here will find a budget hotel with several features for the low rates, including a beachfront area, two pools, and a solid location at the northern end of the Hotel Zone. The pools, while appealing, are often packed to capacity given the size of this 132-room property. Two restaurants, tennis courts, and a gym are also on the grounds. Unfortunately, the beach is narrow with an odd layout that only allows for a small patch of sand. Other loungers and cabanas are set above the beach in paved areas or on grass, but they do have beautiful views.

One Cancun Centro

This mid-range 125-room layover hotel is located on the outskirts of the southern edge of downtown. The spacious lobby that doubles as the public hangout spot and dining area, and the rooms are clean and contemporary, if a bit spare. The pool is functional, but lacks any atmosphere or views. This is one of the more modern options for the price in Cancun, but its location, combined with lack of lunch or dinner options on-site, make it best suited for short stopovers. Those staying longer may want to compare rates with Grand City Hotel or Ambiance Suites, which are more central and have longer hours at their restaurants.

Comfort Inn Cancun Aeropuerto
Carr. Cancun/Aeropouerto M 4 L 5

This 65-room budget hotel near the airport has basic rooms with thin walls, noisy AC units, and views of billboards or warehouse buildings. The restaurant serves all three meals (including beer after 11 a.m.)., and both continental breakfast and transfers to the airport are free, making the hotel suited for short stopovers. Two rooftop hot tubs are an unexpected extra. Guests not in transit to or from the airport will find little reason to stay here. The nearby Courtyard by Marriott Cancun Airport is nicer but also more expensive.

Aloft Cancun
Boulevard Kukulcan KM 9 Mz 48 L-8-1, Zona Hotelera

The 177-room Aloft Cancun is an upper-middle-range Starwood hotel that combines urban, hip decor with business-class amenities. It's located at the Cancun International Convention Center (and under the same ownership), in the heart of the Hotel Zone next to a shopping mall and within a five-minute walk of Mandala Beach Club, where guests get access. It's a good value for this category, but those seeking a more typical all-inclusive beach experience might want to consider the (pricier) Hotel Riu.

Hostal Mayapan

Hostal Mayapan is a no-frills budget hostel set in the Hotel Zone in the old, mostly abandoned Maya Fair Plaza, across the street from Playa Caracol and 15 minutes on foot from several other beaches. The grime and wear and tear are often noted by guests. The rooms are set up in old office spaces that have been renovated into dorms and private quarters, with limited air-conditioning that depends on how many guests are staying in a room. The noise from surrounding restaurants and streets can be a bit much for some. Mezcal Hostel is nicer and has a pool, but it's located downtown.

The Royal Cancun All Suites Resorts
Kukulcan Boulevard Km 4.5 Hotel Zone, Lots C2 & C2A

The three-and-a-half-pearl, all-inclusive Royal Cancun, an All Suites Resort is a kid-friendly beachfront property in the heart of Cancun's touristy Hotel Zone. All 201 contemporary suites have two bedrooms and come with fully equipped kitchens, living and dining areas, and furnished balconies. There's a large on-site supermarket for those who want to cook their own meals or travelers can take advantage of available all-inclusive packages for the three on-site restaurants. There are plenty of on-site activities ranging from spa treatments and sailing to beach volleyball and water aerobics, plus children can utilize the supervised kids' club. The target audience here is definitely families, and couples looking for something a bit more romantic may want to consider the Presidente InterContinental Cancun Resort.
