The Gainsborough Hotel
7-11 Queensberry Place, South Kensington

This historic property has a great South Kensington location and sweet details that could potentially make for a pleasant, affordable stay -- if its rooms were given a major refresh. The two-and-a-half-pearl hotel occupies a classic Victorian row house and has lovely period furnishings in public spaces. Rooms have large flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, electric kettles, cheerful neighborhood views, and Woods of Windsor bath products, but furniture and textiles are seriously worn. There's no on-site parking, but the hotel has an on-site restaurant with a charming breakfast room, 24-hour room service, and a small bar next to an attractive marble fireplace in the lobby living room. Those looking for comparable area accommodations may wish to consider Aster House, an adorable, well-priced bed-and-breakfast that consistently receives high marks from guests.

Radisson Blu Edwardian Hampshire Hotel
31-36 Leicester Square

The 127-room Radisson Blu Edwardian Hampshire Hotel is an upscale property typical of the chain set in the bustling heart of the capital's West End. Overlooking Leicester Square, the hotel is right in the thick of it with most of central London within easy walking distance. While rooms generally feel high-end, noise can be an issue. The free buffet breakfast is extensive and has cooked options, but not all are happy with the quality. The location is one of the major draws; those who don't mind simpler, smaller rooms can stay nearby for almost half the price at the Z Hotel Piccadilly.

The Saint James Hotel, an Ascend Hotel Collection Member
26 Gerrard St E

The Saint James Hotel is a mid-range hotel located in downtown Toronto, less than a five-minute walk away from College subway station as well as the shops and restaurants of Yonge-Dundas Square. 28 chic and modern rooms feature gleaming bathrooms with rainfall showerheads. On-site amenities other than a vending machine, free Wi-Fi, and laundry facilities, are non-existent, but overall the hotel offers excellent value with its convenient location and beautiful rooms. The nearby Ramada Plaza Toronto Downtown has a restaurant and indoor pool for about the same price, but rooms aren't as fresh.

100 Queen’s Gate Hotel London, Curio Collection by Hilton
100 Queen's Gate, South Kensington

100 Queen's Gate Hotel London, Curio Collection by Hilton formerly DoubleTree by Hilton London - Kensington is large, with 228 rooms. The West London location is within walking distance of a tube stop and museums, rooms are small but modern, the lobby is sophisticated, and access to the members’ lounge (where evening drinks are served) is included with most room types. The nearby Millennium Bailey's tends to have more satisfied guests, though its rooms aren't as modern and it lacks a fitness center, unlike this property.

The Marble Arch London
31 Great Cumberland Place

The 42-room upscale Marble Arch by Montcalm is the smaller sister property of the luxurious Montcalm Hotel located across the street. Housed in a small townhouse, the modern boutique hotel offers an equally luxurious experience, though at slightly lower rates and with fewer in-house amenities (guests can use the Montcalm’s spa, fitness center, pool, and restaurants). The contemporary rooms are small but elegantly appointed with scent machines and large flat-screen TVs, and free Wi-Fi, bottled water, and fruit. Breakfast, served in a pleasant sunlit dining room, is available for an additional fee. The central location is close to the tube station and is a short walk to Oxford Street, though there are many other hotels in the area and it’s worth comparing rates.

Mercure London Bloomsbury
130-134 Southampton Row

The Mercure London Bloomsbury is an upper-mid-range option housed in an attractive Victorian building in the bustling and bookish Bloomsbury neighborhood in central London. Rooms are typically small -- a few could even be considered tiny -- and some are prone to street noise, but amenities are good and interiors are well-maintained. Beyond the 24-hour bar and brasserie there's not much else in the way of facilities. Overall it's a solid chain hotel option though it's lacking much in the way character. Travelers should consider The Montague on the Gardens nearby for a lot more personality at around the same rates.

Wombat's City Hostel London
Flat 7 St. Pauls Church 17 Dock Street

Originally opened in 1865 as lodging for seamen, this two-pearl hostel was revamped and reopened in 2014 as a destination for young, hip travelers. The 120 guest spaces at this East London property are cheery but sparse, with polished wood floors, white beds, locker-style closets and bright-colored accent walls. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the property. Travelers interested in a cool budget property should also consider the Walrus Hostel, which is closer to Buckingham Palace, but a tad more expensive.

The Walrus Hostel
172 Westminster Bridge Road

A straightforward budget hostel, The Walrus is within walking distance of many of London's major attractions in the Westminster area. What you see is what you get, which is little beyond a classic English pub, but the Walrus also offers free breakfast, a communal kitchen, and luggage storage. Its dorms hold up to 22 beds, and while most are co-ed, there is a single female-only dorm. However, they lack air-conditioning and have worn decor. London is hardly short on choice when it comes to hostels, so it's worth comparison shopping. SoHostel is a good alternative and has clean, updated rooms and common areas, on-site events, and a bar serving drinks and food.

YHA London St Pancras
79-81 Euston Road, King's Cross

The YHA London St Pancras offers fairly typical, no-frills hostel accommodation in the bustling King's Cross neighborhood of central London. Despite overlooking a busy main road, its location is a big draw, with excellent transport links practically on its doorstep from either King's Cross or Euston Stations. Rooms are basic and showing signs of wear -- especially in bathrooms (which were due for a renovation in early 2016) -- though everything is generally clean and cozy enough. A mix of dorms and private rooms are available, and some have en-suite bathrooms while others share bathrooms. A cafe-bar near reception makes a bright and inviting social hub, however for a hipper hosteling option check out the Generator Hostel nearby, though it's a little pricier.

Danubius Hotel Regents Park
18 Lodge Road, St. Johns Wood

Part of a Hungarian hotel chain, the Danubius is an upscale property with 364 guest rooms and fantastic attractions on the doorstep. Rooms are spacious and bright, but the decor is a little bland, while on-site facilities are adequate for this category of hotel; there are a gym, business center, bar, and quirky Hungarian restaurant, plus parking for a fee. Many guests choose this hotel for its location -- while not in central London, it's within a quick walk of Regent’s Park, London Zoo, and the famous Lord’s Cricket Ground, and is well connected via public transport, too. Travelers who like the location but want a little more luxury could check out the Melia White House.
