Hôtel Quintessence
3004, chemin de la Chapelle, Mont-Tremblant, Québec

The 30-suite Hotel Quintessence is a luxury boutique property on Lake Tremblant with a polished chalet feel within walking distance of attractions, shops, and restaurants. Contemporary, luxurious suites have balconies or terraces with lake views, heated marble floors, stone fireplaces, and separate soaking tubs and walk-in showers, plus some have wet bars, powder rooms, and outdoor hot tubs and fireplaces. A full service spa with a sauna and steam room as well as a 24/7 fitness center are available on-site, plus there's a beautiful outdoor infinity pool (open seasonally) and hot tub with wonderful lake views. There's also an elegant restaurant and wine bar serving tasty French fare that receives excellent reviews, but guests complain the prices are high. Travelers might also want to consider the nearby Fairmont Tremblant Resort, which has both an indoor and outdoor pool as well as two restaurants, all at less expensive rates.

Four Points by Sheraton Levis Convention Centre
5800 Rue J.B. Michaud

The Four Points Sheraton Levis Convention Center is a comfortable, stylish place for a business retreat, featuring spacious, modern rooms with great light. Bathrooms are contemporary, and some have appealing soaking tubs and separate walk-in showers. The year-round outdoor heated pool is a nice touch -- though it may not be particularly appealing during Quebec winters. The distance from Quebec City is a bit of a detractor for this hotel, but a shuttle bus to the Old City is available from June through September, and a ferry that connects directly to the Old City is nearby. For a cost effective and stylish way to see the Old City, Four Points is a solid pick.

The Omni King Edward Hotel
37 King Street East

Possibly the most historic hotel in Toronto, the King Edward has had a reputation for elegance for over 100 years. The lobby, dining rooms, ballrooms, and hallways are arguably the most beautiful of any hotel in Toronto. Most of the rooms have been updated with pedestal sinks and chic, if not slightly Spartan, furniture and decor. All units are spacious with huge, comfy beds and modern flat-screen TVs and coffeemakers. Aptly located on King Street, the King Edward is within easy walking distance of many downtown hot spots and the financial district. The venue is ideal for tourists and business travelers willing to pay for prestige.

DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Toronto Downtown
108 Chestnut Street

The upper-middle-range Doubletree by Hilton Toronto Downtown is well located within walking distance to popular Toronto attractions and the financial and business districts. The hotel has a contemporary, artistic look, and features include an elegant Chinese restaurant, an upscale bistro, a heated indoor pool, and a fitness center. Business travelers appreciate the fully equipped meeting spaces, 24-hour business center, and free Wi-Fi. The 486 guest rooms are modern, though modest, with flat-screen TVs and coffee/tea facilities; some Suites have kitchenettes. There's a breakfast buffet for a fee. Guests could also consider the Residence Inn by Marriott Toronto Downtown/Entertainment District, which has similar amenities plus free breakfast and a hot tub.

Royal Lancaster London
Lancaster Terrace

The Royal Lancaster London is a classic upscale property in London’s Bayswater district, overlooking Hyde Park. The location is ideal for travelers, as Hyde Park is packed with picturesque spots and the tube is essentially downstairs. Interiors are fresh and modern as of our 2018 visit, due to a recent renovation. There are 411 rooms, and the nicest feature Nespresso Machines, white marble bathrooms, and panoramic views of London’s skyline. While they vary in size, all have a sharp, modern look and include seating and White Company bath products as standard. The Hyde Lobby Bar and Nipa Thai restaurant are well-liked, and other on-site features include honey from rooftop hives and a 24-hour fitness center. Travelers seeking a more intimate, boutique vibe could check out nearby La Suite West instead.

Crowne Plaza Hotel Montreal Airport
6600 Cote de Liesse

The Crowne Plaza Hotel Montreal Airport is an upper-middle-range chain hotel about a 10-minute drive from the airport. To be sure, it’s a bit isolated and far from downtown (a 25-minute drive), but there’s a free airport shuttle and amenities include two restaurants, a pool with a waterslide, a fitness center, and a business center and meeting rooms. Its 222 rooms are spacious modern, though past guests have complained about maintenance and cleanliness issues. Amenities include flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, and coffeemakers. Prices are reasonable, but breakfast is not included in the rates. Travelers might also want to consider Hilton Garden Inn Montreal Airport, whose rooms have microwaves, or Hotel Ruby Foo’s, which is closer to downtown.

The Kensington
109 - 113 Queen's Gate, South Kensington

The Kensington is part of the Doyle Collection, a group of eight luxury hotels around the globe. A classy, four-and-a-half pearl property that has 150 rooms, this hotel is comfortable and contemporary with a chic location in the well-heeled neighborhood after which it’s named. Guest rooms are beautifully decorated with plump chairs for relaxing and four-poster beds. Some of the rooms only have baths, but you can opt for a shower/bath combination when booking. Where the Kensington falls short is in its lack of extensive spa facilities.

Holiday Inn Toronto Downtown Centre
30 Carlton Street

Renovated in 2010 with a bright, modern overhaul to the rooms, lobby, and hallways, the three-pearl Holiday Inn Downtown Toronto Centre is nothing fancy. But it’s still a warm, welcoming property in a safe, convenient part of town just between the city’s two major shopping districts -- the Toronto Eaton Centre and Bloor-Yorkville area. Rooms (and even suites) are on the small side and thus not ideal for families planning to spend a lot of time in the hotel, but the pool with its outdoor patio offers a relaxing respite from downtown, as does the attached Caesar Spa. Virtually every hot spot in the city is within easy access and, for sports fans, the famous Maple Leaf Gardens is right next door. Compare rates at the nearby and enormous Chelsea Hotel for a bigger indoor pool.

Sofitel London St James
6 Waterloo Place

Sofitel London St James is an upscale property on Waterloo Place, in the affluent St James’s neighborhood. While the property is thoroughly modern, it does embrace some historical elements, including the Coco Chanel-inspired bar and Neoclassical architecture. The 183 refined and spacious rooms are outfitted with elegant decor and include high-end amenities and stylish bathrooms. The hotel has three dining options, each with its own personality. French pastries and gentle harp music characterize The Rose Lounge, while St James Bar calls to mind Paris circa the 1920s, and The Balcon restaurant serves French cuisine in a grandiose setting. There’s a modern gym and spa, along with some fashionable meeting rooms. Those looking for lower rates and contemporary rooms should check out the classic Washington Mayfair Hotel.

Hôtel Le Germain Montréal
2050 rue Mansfield

The upscale Hotel Le Germain Montreal is a 101-room property with sophisticated, modern decor and a business-friendly vibe. The hotel is located in downtown Montreal, right across from McGill University and within easy walking distance of shops, restaurants, and public transportation. Guest rooms feature simple but stylish modern decor, goose-down bedding, Nespresso coffeemakers, minibars, and Tivoli sound systems. The hotel has a bar and gourmet restaurant, which serves up a free daily breakfast buffet. Free espresso is available in the lobby, and room service is offered during limited hours. The hotel's 24-hour fitness center is small but functional, but there's no pool and spa services are only offered in-room. The Omni Mont-Royal Hotel, which is just a block away, offers a large, seasonal outdoor pool, extensive fitness facilities, and an on-site spa, but Wi-Fi and breakfast cost extra.
