Kimpton Hotel Palomar San Diego
1047 5th Ave

Located in the lively Gaslamp Quarter, Kimpton Hotel Palomar San Diego is a hip luxury property with unique design touches and a young vibe. Surrounding streets are filled with bars and restaurants, while the waterfront is about a 20-minute walk. The on-site eatery earns raves from guests for its creative American fare and cocktails, and the fourth-floor pool has a relaxing deck and seasonal bar. The 211 rooms and suites are massive and modern, with luxe touches like Italian linens and rainforest showers with Jerusalem stone. Many options also feature incredible views of the city skyline. Other features include a fitness center and a full-service spa with a couples soaking tub. There are fees for Wi-Fi and breakfast, though. The US Grant -- a Luxury Collection Hotel has a more classic elegant feel, but higher rates.

InterContinental The Clement Monterey
750 Cannery Row

The 208-room InterContinental The Clement Monterey is a luxury hotel right on Monterey Bay and Cannery Row with exceptional ocean views throughout the property. Contemporary rooms offer marble bathrooms with soaking tubs, and some rooms have gas fireplaces or balconies overlooking the waterfront. The lovely outdoor pool and accompanying hot tub both have beautiful fountain features, and guests can indulge in massages or body treatments in the full-service spa. The C Restaurant + Bar receives good reviews, but prices can be high, and Wi-Fi as well as all parking options (self, garage, valet) incur fees. Travelers could compare rates and amenities with the neighboring upscale Monterey Plaza Hotel & Spa.

H2 Hotel
219 Healdsburg Ave

This 36-room boutique hotel in the heart of Healdsburg is a good pick for eco-conscious folks looking for something convenient to wineries with a modern, hip, relaxed vibe. The rooms are all done in a minimalist style, using sustainable materials, and are equipped with all the high-tech amenities you could want: flat-screen TVs, iPod docks, DVD players, and free Wi-Fi. Plus, they come with private balconies or patios. The H2 offers some pretty interesting perks -- from "water stations" on each floor offering flat or sparkling water, to free loaner bikes, to free weekend yoga classes in the Green Room. Another big highlight is Spoonbar, an on-site restaurant serving modern Mediterranean fare made with fresh, local ingredients and seasonal cocktails (indoor and outdoor seating available). There's also a nice solar-heated outdoor pool surrounded by greenery.

Hilton San Diego Resort & Spa
1775 East Mission Bay Drive

The 357-room Hilton San Diego Resort & Hotel opened in 1962 and enjoys a central, Mission Bay-front location close to San Diego’s most popular attractions. It offers a top-notch spa, a beach with numerous watersports options, large pool, multiple dining options, and organized children’s activities. However, the resort is a bit isolated with no restaurants within walking distance. Rooms are contemporary and come with luxury beds and bedding, coffeemakers, and turndown service. It’s competitively priced but so are other similar resort properties that are closer to Mission Beach and within walking distance of restaurants, such as the Catamaran Resort Hotel and Spa.

Residence Inn by Marriott Los Angeles LAX
5933 W. Century Blvd

The mid-range Residence Inn Los Angeles LAX/Century Boulevard is a bright, modern airport hotel that opened in 2015. It’s chock full of attractive amenities, such as a free 24/7 airport shuttle, a hot breakfast included in the rates, a heated outdoor pool, fitness center, guest laundry, and three attached restaurants, including a Starbucks. The hotel’s residential-style suites are spacious and include full kitchens, sleeper sofas, and bathrooms with walk-in showers. The hotel also offers a grocery-shopping service to guests. On-site parking is available, but it's expensive. While room rates are competitive, better deals can be found in the LAX area, including at the Sheraton Gateway Los Angeles, which has comparable amenities and two fine-dining restaurants.

Four Seasons Residence Club Aviara, Carlsbad Ca.
7210 Blue Heron Pl

The 246-room luxury condominium complex is more a residence than a hotel, with two "neighborhoods,” each with its own heated outdoor pool and well-equipped fitness center. The vibe is laid-back and expansive grounds are filled with greenery and beautiful landscaping. Spacious villas are outfitted in pleasant contemporary decor and offer the comforts of home, including fully equipped kitchens, large living rooms, and washers and dryers. There’s a farm-to-table restaurant on-site, as well as two cafes and poolside snack bars, plus a stylish spa with a nail salon. Families with kids will find plenty to do here, with children’s pools, a kids’ club, and various organized activities. There’s not much within walking distance though, so a car is necessary. Travelers might also want to consider the nearby Park Hyatt Aviara Resort.

DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Irvine - Spectrum
90 Pacifica

DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Irvine-Spectrum is an attractive three-and-a-half-pearl property that's fresh from a 2017 renovation. It primarily draws business travelers though families stay here too for its excellent array of features. There's a restaurant and bar, heated outdoor pool and whirlpool, fitness center and 24-hour business center, plus a free airport shuttle and Wi-Fi throughout. Its 252 spacious guest rooms are modern and have a hint of style, and all come with flat-screen TVs, coffeemakers, and mini-fridges, but they lack microwaves. Standard Kings with sleeper sofas are available. Rates are competitive, but they don’t include breakfast or parking. Travelers who want similar amenities and a location closer to the airport can consider Hilton Irvine/Orange County Airport.

Hollywood Historic Hotel
5162 Melrose Ave

The 62-room Hollywood Historic Hotel has 1920s architectural features that are reminiscent of the black-and-white film era. It is a short drive to the bright lights of Hollywood Boulevard, but guests will find more budget than luxury, especially in the rooms, where guests complain about worn carpeting and furnishings and outdated furniture. Budget-conscious couples and single travelers will likely appreciate the value, though, but there are no on-site features besides a vending machine.

Ocean Surf Inn & Suites
16555 Pacific Coast Hwy

Travelers looking for a no-frills, affordable beach getaway in Sunset Beach will find just that at the two-and-a-half-pearl Ocean Surf Inn & Suites. It's located across from the ocean and Green Belt park, with decor that's beachy and cheerful. A rooftop terrace with panoramic ocean views is a highlight among features, and freebies include Wi-Fi throughout, beach towels, and use of sports equipment, but there's no breakfast offered or pool on-site. While many of the hotel's 30 spacious and clean guest rooms have a similar look as common areas, others are more generic. Still, they're pleasant and come well-equipped with comfy beds, flat-screen TVs, microwaves, mini-fridges, and coffeemakers. The nearby Best Western Surf City Hotel offers a free continental breakfast, an outdoor pool, and it’s closer to downtown Huntington Beach and the pier, but it’s farther from the ocean.

Extended Stay America - San Francisco - San Mateo - SFO
1830 Gateway Dr

The two-pearl Extended Stay America - San Francisco - San Mateo - SFO doesn't offer much more than rooms, but that’s good enough for the mostly business clientele staying in the area for extended periods of time. The 136 studios are conveniently outfitted with kitchenettes. However, some guests note that the rooms are dating and lack in the cleanliness department, which isn’t surprising as housekeeping is very limited. There’s no fitness center, but guests can take advantage of free perks like grab-and-go breakfast bags in the morning, Wi-Fi, and parking. A laundry room is a bonus for long-term guests as are nearby restaurants. If travelers want a location in San Francisco (a 30-minute drive), check out Donatello Hotel which has rooms with microwaves and mini-fridges, plus amenities like a gym and restaurant.
