Little Arches Boutique Hotel
Enterprise Beach Rd

Little Arches Boutique Hotel is a small upscale boutique property with only 10 guest rooms. Due to its small size, the hotel has a private, luxurious ambiance, and the rates are reasonable for this caliber of property. The rooms are both cozy and stylish with sophisticated furnishings and attractive Earthenware pottery accents. The views from the pool and sundeck area are breathtaking and the hotel’s on-site restaurant, Café Luna, is highly regarded. However, the hotel is not located directly on the beach (it’s a two-minute walk down the road), which may be a drawback for some.

Treasure Beach by Elegant Hotels
Hwy 1, Paynes Bay

This 35-suite boutique hotel has a prime location on the west (platinum) coast of Barbados, close to high-end dining, shopping, and entertainment. The restaurant and pool area are at the heart of the property and are picturesque and popular with guests. The property has a narrow but beautiful beachfront with calm, clear water. All rooms are suites, and the hotel’s three Deluxe suites offer luxurious perks such as spa baths and private plunge pools. However, the furnishings and decor in the basic suites are nondescript and not anything fancy. The small size of this hotel allows the staff to provide personalized, exceptional service.

Savannah Beach Hotel
Garrison Rd

Set on the west coast of Barbados, a short drive from the airport, the upper-middle-range Savannah Beach Hotel is a family-friendly all-inclusive. The 19th-century main house is surrounded by winding pools and lush tropical gardens. Its 92 British colonial-style rooms are spacious, clean, and comfortable, and have patios or verandas, but some interiors feel dated. Three on-site restaurants serve food that's  constantly praised by guests for its quality and diversity. The rocky beach is less than ideal for swimming, however there’s a sandy beach a short walk away. Savannah suits families, couples, and small groups, but the property’s many stairs might make it difficult for mobility-challenged guests to navigate and the Wi-Fi is plain terrible. Travelers seeking an all-inclusive with fewer stairs may want to try nearby Sugar Bay instead.

Inchcape Seaside Villas
Silver Sands, Inchcape

Inchcape Seaside Villas comprises 13 rustic, beachy studio or apartment villas and is located in the Silver Sands neighborhood on the south coast of the island. Decorated with white couches and chairs, wood tables and desks, and white tile and brick, the units are both cozy and stylish. There is no pool but the property is located on the edge of Silver Sands Beach, which is a great location for windsurfing and other water sports. The remote location may be a turn-off for some, as you have to drive to restaurants or other destinations. However, others may find that the sleepy atmosphere and laid-back feel of the property provides the ultimate escape.

Island Inn Hotel
Aquatic Gap, Garrison Historic Area, St Michael

One of the least-expensive all-inclusive properties on the island, Island Inn Hotel has a great location -- in the Garrison, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and less than a six-minute drive to Bridgetown. It is also near bars, restaurants, and entertainment. While it is not directly on the beach, the beach is a two-minute walk down the road. Despite its location, the hotel has some drawbacks, including a small pool that gets crowded, and only one restaurant on-site. Rooms here are retro-modern (with an emphasis on retro); rooms at the nearby Savannah Beach Hotel are more updated. For a bit more money, the Sea Breeze Beach Hotel, another all-inclusive property, offers a larger pool area, and is much more picturesque, offering a beautiful view of the beach. Barbados Beach Club, in the same price category as the Island Inn Hotel, also has a better pool.

Ocean 15 Hotel
Dover Gardens

Located 15 minutes from the airport in an area of Barbados known for its nightlife, the lower-middle-range Ocean 15 is a small-scale hotel offering good value. It has 16 rooms, and while Standard Rooms are small, Studios and One- and Two-Bedroom Suites are spacious, and have full kitchens. The beach is a five-minute walk up the road, along with island-style food shacks, bars, and restaurants. Ocean 15 has an outdoor pool, but it’s tiny. Its restaurant and bar serves all meals -- and the food is good. Travelers seeking a closer beach and a bigger could try the nearby Time Out Hotel.

Sugar Cane Club Hotel & Spa
Maynards

This four-pearl Mediterranean-style hotel and spa is tucked away in the hills of northern Barbados. Although it lacks a beach, the 40-suite property offers several things other hotels don't -- lush, expansive garden grounds; a gully walk; scenic wildlife such as green monkeys and roosters roaming freely; and an adults-only atmosphere. All-inclusive packages are available, although there is only one restaurant, La Salsa, serving all meals. (A “rum shop” is also on the premises, but open hours are limited.) The one- and two-bedroom suites are clean and include kitchens and patios. An outdoor pool, spa, fitness center, art gallery, and beach shuttle add to the property's appeal. Those after self-contained accommodation closer to the beach could try Beach View, though its design isn't quite as elegant.

Holiday Inn Express St. Joseph
3019 Lakeshore Dr

The 82-room Holiday Inn Express St. Joseph is a lower-middle-range property across from Lake Michigan -- although a steep drop prevents direct access. The hotel is geared toward business travelers and families, offering three meeting rooms, an indoor pool and hot tub, free breakfast, and KidSuites with PlayStations and bunk-beds. The hotel owns the next-door restaurant/bar, which provides room service, and freshly baked cookies are doled out in the lobby every afternoon. Rooms are contemporary and have flat-screen TVs along with mini-fridges and microwaves; some have whirlpool tubs and lake views from balconies. Travelers who want direct waterfront access may prefer the Inn at Harbor Shores, which can have higher rates, though it also offers a roof deck.

Royal Westmoreland
St James

Royal Westmoreland is an upscale gated estate community set on 250 acres with 200 homes managed by vacation rental and concierge service, Island Villas. State-of-the-art amenities include access to a world class golf course, Clubhouse restaurant, fitness center, lovely infinity pool, beach club (at nearby Mullins Beach), and free beach shuttle. Two-story Villas consist of elegant three-bedroom layouts and are equipped with full kitchens and private terraces. Grocery packages and concierge services are available (at additional costs), and rooms within the Villas can be rented independently depending on the season. Royal Westmoreland suits discerning groups, couples, and families seeking an exclusive home-away-from home. Renting a car makes sense given the distance to many amenities. Travelers seeking luxury closer to the beach could try the all-inclusive, Sugar Bay Barbados.

Rio Guest House
Paradise Village

The nine-room, no-frills Rio Guest House is one of the most budget-friendly options in St. Lawrence Gap -- a touristy area on Barbados' south coast. Dated rooms are clean and have fans, however, expect to pay for air-conditioning; they either have shared or private bathrooms. The property sits on a residential street, but is just a two-minute walk to Dover Beach, as well as area bars, shops, and restaurants. Guests have access to a shared lounge, a fully equipped kitchen, and outdoor balcony, plus Wi-Fi is free. Solo travelers will likely appreciate Rio's hostel vibe, but couples may prefer the more modern rooms, pool, and free breakfast at the nearby Time Out Hotel.
