Radisson Blu Hotel, Birmingham
12 Holloway Circus Queensway, Queensway

The 211-room Radisson Blu Hotel, Birmingham is a chic hotel located within convenient walking distance to popular attractions. There is a distinct attention to architecture and design here, from the striking blue and green mosaic exterior to the modern lobby, lounges, restaurant, and bar. The stylish rooms were designed by famous decorator Matteo Thun, and are available in three unique styles: Fashion, Chic, and Fresh. All rooms are colorful and contemporary with modern bathrooms and flat-screen TVs. The hotel also offers a spa and has an extensive conference floor with various meeting rooms and amenities.

Best Western On The Beach
337 East Beach Boulevard, PO Box 481

Geared to vacationers perhaps looking to save a little money, this 93-room mid-range hotel delivers satisfactory rooms with a prime beachfront location on the Gulf of Mexico. The exterior and some interior spaces look dated, but the hotel is clean and well-maintained. Amenities can include microwaves, fridges, or full kitchenettes, depending on the room. While the beach is the big attraction, the indoor pool serves guests well on rainy days. Nice lounge chairs and umbrellas are available for a fee. Beachfront rooms have small balconies and great views.

Island House Hotel Orange Beach - a DoubleTree by Hilton
26650 Perdido Beach Blvd

The Island House is a three-pearl property with an upscale beach vibe and lots of fun features for this price point. Contemporary beach style rooms are spacious and each includes a balcony overlooking the public beach, which is accessible via a long wooden boardwalk. The swimming pool isn't huge, but the additional kiddie pool is a nice touch. Expect to pay extra for breakfast and beach chairs. Wi-Fi and parking are included and the on-site Island Grille gets high marks for lunch and breakfast -- but it does not offer dinner service.

Perdido Beach Resort
27200 Perdido Beach Blvd

Located right on the Gulf of Mexico, this beach property feels more like a vacation condo than a mid-range, 346-room hotel. With a slew of amenities including an indoor pool and hot tub, a spacious outdoor pool and kiddie pool, and a full fitness center, there’s plenty on-site to keep guests busy. There are also four restaurants -- ranging from a formal dining experience to the poolside grill -- and two bars. Though the building is clearly an older property, it’s well-maintained and clean, and guest rooms have mini-fridges, free Wi-Fi, and central air-conditioning along with patios with views.

Phoenix All Suites Hotel
201 E. Beach Blvd.

The lower-middle-range Phoenix All Suites Hotel actually is two beachfront properties about a half-mile apart in the heart of Gulf Shores on Beach Boulevard. The spacious, condo-style suites have uniform amenities and decor, and include full kitchens and large balconies facing the ocean, but decor is tired and dated. Each property has its own small outdoor pool overlooking the ocean, however no food service is offered. Wi-Fi and parking are free, with one parking pass per suite. Rates are are reasonable for these beachfront suites but travelers might want to also consider the Hampton Inn & Suites Orange Beach -- a more traditional style hotel -- in nearby Orange Beach, which has a fitness center and includes breakfast, but rates will be higher, especially in peak summer months.
