Villas DeRosa Beach Resort
Lot 36 Aventuras Akumal

Villas DeRosa Beach Resort is a family-run mid-range hotel with 27 spotless condo units and standard hotel rooms. Condos come with one to three bedrooms and sport fully-equipped kitchens, dining rooms, large living rooms, and big balconies. This hotel is popular with families and dive groups, thanks to the self-catering units and on-site dive center. Other pluses include a reef right off the beach and free, fast fiber optic Wi-Fi. There's no dedicated restaurant area, but food menus are available from morning until night, with service to the rooms, pool terrace, or rooftop bar. Keep in mind that this spot is about a 10-minute drive to Akumal proper. For a self-catering spot closer to Akumal, check rates at the Las Casitas Akumal (though there's no dive center or on-site food).

TRS Yucatan Hotel
Carretera Chetumal-Puerto Juarez Km, 256-100

The 130-room Royal Suites Yucatan is the smallest, quietest, and most luxurious resort in the five-resort Grand Palladium Riviera Maya complex, and the only one for adults only. Located along the beautiful Akumal coastline between Tulum and Cancun, this upscale resort gives guests an all-inclusive experience with more food an drink options than you can count on both hands, all-day and night activities, soft sand and coral rock beaches, wildlife, a huge hydrotherapy-based spa with gym (access for a fee), and relaxing nature-filled grounds. While Royal Suites guests get full access to the features at the sister resorts, the reverse is not true. The rooms have much more contemporary decor than what is found at the sister properties, and the lagoon-facing Mayan Suites here are among the nicest accommodations in the entire complex. Just note that the property is sprawling and it's a trek to the beach, though shuttle service is available.

Grand Palladium Kantenah Resort & Spa
Carretera Chetumal-Puerto Juarez Km, 256-100, Municipio Solidaridad

Sharing space with the Grand Palladium Colonial in a massive five-resort complex, the 422-room Grand Palladium Kantenah is located along the beautiful Akumal coastline between Tulum and Cancun. This luxury resort gives guests an all-inclusive experience with more food and drink options than you can count on both hands, all-day and night activities, soft sand and coral rock beaches, wildlife, a huge hydrotherapy based spa with gym (there's a fee to use facilities), and relaxing nature-filled grounds. Accommodations range from slightly dim but authentically decorated contemporary Standard Rooms to chicer suites; some rooms have outdoor showers. Decor is a notch above what is found on the White Sand and Riviera side, but that side offers more affordable two-room Suites. The adult-only Royal Suites has the nicest (but priciest) rooms.

Luxury Bahia Principe Akumal
Carretera Chetumal - Cancún Km 250, Playa Aventuras

The 758-room Luxury Bahia Principe Akumal Don Pablo Collection is a solid all-inclusive experience in the resort-packed Akumal area. It's directly in front of a sprawling beach with turquoise waters, white sand, and rocky reefs, and there are also 13 different restaurants and bars, including beach bars, pool bars, buffets, and a la cartes. Other features include a rejuvenating and relaxing hydrotherapy spa; kids' club; and two sparkling beach-view pools. Rooms have attractive, if not luxurious, beachy colonial style, ample amenities including toiletry kits, stocked minibars (with top-shelf liquor), butler service, and a pillow menu. The complex's other high-end property, the Sian Ka'an, is more luxurious and often costs about the same -- but it is for adults only.

Grand Palladium White Sand Resort & Spa
Carretera Chetumal -Puerto Juarez Km.256-100, Municipio Solidaridad

Sharing space with Grand Palladium Riviera and Royal Suites Yucatan, the 264-room Grand Palladium White Sand Resort & Spa is the second smallest property in a massive five-resort complex. Located along the beautiful Akumal coastline between Tulum and Cancun, this upscale resort gives guests an all-inclusive experience with more food and drink options than you can count on both hands, all-day and night activities, soft sand and coral rock beaches, wildlife, a huge hydrotherapy-based spa with gym (access for a fee), and relaxing nature-filled grounds. Room decor in the Kantenah and Colonial resorts is a bit nicer, but there are affordable two-room Suites on offer here as well as adult-only, lagoon-adjacent Mayan Suites. Riviera also has two-room Suites at a similar price point but its location is less convenient to the pools and restaurants. Couples may also want to consider the adult-only Royal Suites Yucatan, but it's pricier.

Grand Bahia Principe Tulum
Carretera Chetumal Benito Juarez, Km 250, Local B

With 978 rooms, the Grand Bahia Principe Tulum is the second largest property in a four-resort complex. It's ideal for friends and couples who want a basic all-inclusive experience and a beautiful stretch of beach. Simple rooms are spacious (if slightly dated) and feature minibars and private outdoor space. With two pools, a spa, 10 restaurants and bars, Dolphinarium, and access to the golf club and Hacienda shopping plaza, this place is packed with everything you expect to find at a large upper-middle-range resort. For proximity to family-friendly features, check out sister property, Grand Coba. For an indulgent adults-only escape, upgrade to Luxury Sian Ka'an

Del Sol Beachfront Hotel
Seccion G Lot 41A, Calle Half Moon Bay

This 29-unit hotel off North Akumal’s Half Moon Bay has both clean and bright bare-bones budget rooms (with mini-fridges) and fully equipped apartment-style condos. Either way, you can count on fabulous oceanfront views, simple-but-funky Mexican decor, crashing waves outside your window, and front row hammock seating for some out-of-this-world sunrises. There are a restaurant and bar with a lively scene two doors down; free bikes, kayaks, and snorkeling gear; fast and free Wi-Fi, and an on-site shop. However, if you have an aversion to clumps of seaweed on the shore, you’re better off sticking to someplace off Akumal Bay.

Grand Oasis Tulum
Km 252 Carret. Chetumal - Pto. Juarez

The 112-room, all-inclusive Grand Oasis Tulum is the luxurious sister of neighboring Oasis Tulum. Over half of the simple, modern rooms face the garden, but the real gems are the few Ocean Front Rooms sporting personal beach decks, hot tubs, and chic decor. Most of the 10 restaurants and bars (and most of the crowds) are located between the sister resorts, leaving the Grand Oasis’ exclusive areas (especially the private beach club) feeling delightfully relaxed and spacious. The full-service spa, large Casa Club sports lounge, and easy Smartcar rentals don’t hurt either, but fees for Internet, room service, and a few other extras do sting.

The Sian Ka'an at Grand Tulum
Carretera Chetumal a Puerto Juarez Km 251

The upscale, 76-room Sian Ka'an at Grand Tulum is an adults-only all-inclusive along a serene beach, set about a 20-minute drive north of Tulum. The powder-soft beach is beautiful but small, and many guests gripe over minor issues that add up to an overall disappointing experience. Still, attractive rooms are spacious and have minibars, AC, and L'Occitane bath products, plus stellar oceanfront views in many. Some have terraces with private pools or whirlpools. With free access to facilities at Grand Oasis Tulum, guests have a total of eight dining options, 13 bars, and three adults-only pools, as well as a spa and temazcal, basic gym, and daily and nightly activities and entertainment. Secrets Akumal Riviera Maya is a great alternative for those wanting a larger beach, consistently great food, and fewer hiccups.
