Secrets Akumal Riviera Maya
Carretera Federal 307 Km 254 + 600

The 434-room Secrets Akumal Riviera Maya is a luxury, adult-only property set right on the soft sands of Akumal Bay. The hotel caters to couples with romantic grounds and spacious, double-occupancy-only rooms with two-person whirlpools. Food quality and variety receives positive reviews, and with six restaurants, a main buffet, and two 24-hour options as part of the all-inclusive package, guests won't go hungry. Several bars keep glasses full, while organized daily activities and nightly entertainment, sports courts, and free snorkel gear offer a break from the three pools and soft beach. The hotel's quiet but central location in the Riviera Maya make it an ideal base for exploring the region or just relaxing. On the downside, the beach can be crowded and pool chairs often fill up quickly. For a similar but often cheaper alternative, consider Akumal Bay Beach and Wellness Resort

UNICO 20 87 Hotel Riviera Maya
Mza 22 Calle Carretera Federal 307, Chetumal-Puerto Juarez, Km 256+100

The 448-room UNICO 20 87 Hotel Riviera Maya is a beautiful adult-only all-inclusive resort located on a lovely beach between Playa del Carmen and Tulum. It caters to couples and groups of friends seeking a fun-filled vacation and restful nights, with tons of activities during the day but none of the evening shows found at other more bustling resorts in the area. Rooms are upscale and sleek, with modern Mexican design and excellent amenities, including Nespresso machines, huge flat-screen TVs, free minibars, and pillow menus with aromatherapy options. Food is outstanding in all of its four restaurants, and food and drinks can be ordered around the pools. The all-inclusive package is one of the most comprehensive around, but note that extras are expensive. For something similar yet slightly cheaper, consider the Luxury Bahia Principe Sian Ka’an Don Pablo Collection

Grand Bahia Principe Coba
Carretera Chetumal - Cancun Km 250

With 1,080 rooms, the Grand Bahia Principe Coba is the largest resort in the property's Riviera Maya complex. Geared toward families, this upper-middle-range resort has features such as baby, kids', and teens' clubs; a water park playground; kids' menus; and special amenities kits in Family Suites. Simple, colorful rooms are spacious enough for small families, but can adjoined for larger parties. With two pools, a spa, 14 restaurants and bars, and access to the golf club and hacienda shopping plaza, this place is packed with features -- but there's no direct beach access. To avoid a 10-minute shuttle to the beach, check out sister property, Grand Tulum, or upgrade to Luxury Akumal

Luxury Bahia Principe Sian Ka'an
Carretera Chetumal - Cancun Km 25, Cancun Km 250

The 420-suite Luxury Bahia Principe Sian Kaan is the most exclusive offering within the Mayan Riviera's Bahia Principe resort complex. This adult-only all-inclusive has three restaurants, a snack bar, and four bars, plus a private off-site beach area with beach bar and water sports. An ideal resort for couples, all rooms have top-shelf minibars, 24-hour room service, and luxe amenities -- and are located in semi-private spots within lush garden grounds. Some have private decks with hot tubs. However, if you want to be located directly on the beach without sacrificing perks (but are willing to downgrade room quality), check out sister resort Luxury Bahia Principe Akumal

Grand Sirenis Riviera Maya Resort
Carretera Federal Cancun-Tulum, Km. 256.3, Zona Costera

Previously two individual properties, the upscale 948-room Grand Sirenis Riviera Maya Hotel & Spa is a true mega-resort all-inclusive. Located along a rocky section of coastline and within lush jungle grounds, the scenery is beautiful. Rooms have a contemporary and sleek geometric decor, spacious bathrooms with jetted tubs and spa showers, big beds, and sitting areas. Between the pools, lazy river, beach games, enormous spa (one of the area's best), gym, dolphin discovery, and multiple restaurants, there's no shortage of things to do, though waiting for the trams to take you from point A to B can get annoying. Rates are typically competitive for a four-pearl resort, but those seeking a more intimate experience may want to compare prices with the Akumal Bay Beach & Wellness Resort.

Akumal Bay Beach & Wellness Resort
Km. 104 Carretera Federal Cancun-Chetumal

Just a 15-minute beachside walk south of Akumal's hustle and bustle, the 324-room Akumal Bay Beach and Wellness Resort is a luxury all-inclusive with a long, beautiful beach. After undergoing a massive revamp in late 2014, this property has added a handful of spots to eat and grab a drink; a rustic wellness center with yoga, body treatments, and exercise classes; and lots of pools and beachside lounge areas. It also seriously upgraded its rooms, all of which are Junior Suites sporting modern upscale decor, large bathrooms, outdoor hot tubs, local toiletries, minibars, and oceanfront views; Penthouses feature huge rooftop decks with uninterrupted views across the bay.

Grand Palladium Colonial Resort & Spa
Carretera Chetumal-Puerto Juarez Km, 256-100, Municipio Solidaridad

Sharing space with Grand Palladium Kantenah in a massive five-resort complex, the 414-room Grand Palladium Colonial is located along the beautiful Akumal coastline between Tulum and Cancun. This upscale resort gives guests an all-inclusive experience with more food and drink options than you can count on both hands, all-day and night activities, soft sand and coral rock beaches, wildlife, huge hydrotherapy-based spa with gym (access for a fee), and relaxing nature-filled grounds. Rooms range from slightly dim but authentically decorated to chic suites; some rooms have outdoor showers. The Colonial has a central location on the complex (near the kids' club, making it well-suited to families) as well as nicer decor than both the Riviera and White Sand -- though those resorts have more affordable two-room suites.

Hotel Akumal Caribe
Hwy 307, Km 104, Carretera Cancun-Tulum

Hotel Akumal Caribe is a solid choice for a laid-back beachfront hotel in Akumal, next to the Akumal Dive Center. This three-pearl property has 42 modern guest rooms and bungalows with simple decor. They may lack flat-screen TVs, but all come with air-conditioning, free Wi-Fi, mini-fridges, and kettles. Some have kitchenettes or direct beach access from a furnished terrace. Features here include a restaurant, beach bar, free continental breakfast, and a small spa. The large outdoor pool deck is lined with loungers and thatch-style umbrellas are available at the beach -- which is also known for good snorkeling. For a quieter stay, check out La Villas Akumal which has similar amenities, villas with kitchens, and a location outside the main city center.

Las Casitas Akumal
Akumal, Quintana Roo

The mid-range Las Casitas Akumal is located along the waters of northern Akumal Beach, and all 18 of its units have generous private terraces with uninterrupted views of Half Moon Bay and the leafy grounds. Ideal for small groups or families looking to self-cater, these simple house-like units feature free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs, and full kitchens with everything needed to whip up margaritas or mac and cheese. However, the prime central location brings lots of foot traffic and some noise near the entrance; if you’re looking for a more secluded escape you may want to check out Las Villas Akumal a few minutes south.

Las Villas Akumal
Km 104 Fracc. Akumal C, Playa Jade, Carretera Cancun Tulum

Located on a pristine (and rocky) stretch of sand just a few minutes' drive south of Akumal Beach’s increasingly popular center, the 26-villa, upper-mid-range Las Villas Akumal feels miles away. Most units are bright and feature full kitchens; all have purified water jugs (as faucet water is undrinkable) and free high-speed Wi-Fi. There are also beach loungers, free kayak and snorkel rentals, drink service by the (small) pool, and a simple restaurant overlooking the bay. It's best suited for families or couples looking for a quiet getaway, though you’ll have to trade the serenity for hustle and bustle if you want easy access to entertainment and restaurants.
