Havana Beach Resort
47/5 Moo 5, Haad Thong Nai Pan, Surat Thani

Havana Beach Resort is a lower-middle-range hotel set on one Koh Phangan's longest and most beautiful white-sand beaches, Thong Nai Pan Yai. The sleepy area is far removed from the island's buzzing nightlife scenes and is best suited to couples and families looking for a low-key beach retreat. The hotel's 50 guest rooms have furnished patios and standard modern amenities like TVs, kettles, mini-fridges, and safes. Unfortunately, rooms also have dated interiors and dingy rundown bathrooms. Facilities are basic and tired looking, with just an outdoor swimming pool and a beachfront restaurant and bar. Indian, Thai, and Western meals are served, as well as regular seafood barbecues on the beach, plus free buffet breakfast. Guests who'd prefer to stay in the center of the action should consider Palita Lodge in Haad Rin.

Longbay Resort
58 / 5 Moo 8, Haad Yao Beach

Longbay Resort is a boutique mid-range property located along Koh Phangan's peaceful northwest coast, on the white sands of Haad Yao Bay. It's geared towards couples and families looking for a low-key place to unwind, and the scenic beach is the main focal point. Facilities include a large outdoor swimming pool with a poolside bar, a multi-cuisine restaurant, a beachfront cabana bar, and a massage hut on the beach. The 31 bungalows have hardwood interiors, and balconies with views of either the tropical grounds, pool, or ocean. Most room types are well maintained, though the entry-level Garden Huts are quite rundown and cramped. Bathrooms are aged and could also do with an update. Another hotel worth considering is the Maehaad Bay Resort, which features stylish contemporary rooms and a gorgeous swimming pool.

Pinnacle Koh Tao Resort
26/20 Moo 3, June Juea Bay

The three-and-a-half pearl Pinnacle Koh Tao Dive Resort is a cliffside property with a remote beachfront location. Although removed from the main town, it provides a quiet stay and plenty to do thanks to amenities like a gorgeous swimming pool, private beach, dive school with a private fleet of dive boats, free hot breakfast buffet, restaurant, bar, and free Wi-Fi. The 45 contemporary rooms are air-conditioned and come with balconies, kettles, and minibars; some rooms have lovely sea views. The walkways are steep, but the hotel does have an in-resort shuttle that’s convenient to use. Travelers could also consider Charm Churee Village as an alternative, as it has a massage hut on the private beach and an overall romantic vibe.

Weekender Resort
124/19 Moo 3

Weekender Resort is an upper-middle-range hotel with an excellent variety of leisure facilities, modern suites, and roomy villas. It's ideally located in the heart of downtown Lamai and set along a scenic white-sand beach. Villas have generous floor-plans, stylish contemporary interiors, and some feature private plunge pools. Standard and Superior Rooms are convenient and well appointed with modern amenities, though they're fairly dated. Prime facilities include a large beachfront swimming pool, a multi-cuisine restaurant and bar with ocean views, a full-service spa and gym, and a meeting space and business lounge. The property offers lots of garden space and quiet common areas. As an alternative hotel option, Pavilion Samui Villas and Resort has fresher rooms and offers direct beach access -- though rates can be higher.

Koh Tao Montra Resort & Spa
1/51 Moo 2

Koh Tao Montra Resort is a three-pearl beachfront hotel with a relaxed family-friendly vibe and a great range of facilities. Ideally located in a quiet part of downtown, a short walk from both Mae Haad Pier and Sairee Beach. Facilities include a large infinity swimming pool with a swim-up bar, a beachfront restaurant, a spa and gym, a tour-desk, and affiliated dive center. Sixty rooms are clean and pleasant with options including spacious suites, pool villas with ocean views, and two-bedroom family rooms. Interiors blend contemporary stylings with traditional Thai decor, and rooms have balcony seating areas and modern amenities. The beachfront is fairly quiet and nice for lounging or walks, but not as clean as neighboring beaches. Another hotel in the area worth considering is the Sensi Paradise, which has a multi-tiered pool.

The Tarna Align Resort
33, Moo 1

Perched on a hill with scenic views of Sairee Beach and the Gulf of Thailand, Tarna Align Resort offers a modern, upscale stay in relaxed Koh Tao. The 29 stylish rooms offer flat-screen TVs with cable channels, air-conditioning, and safes, plus outdoor spaces with hot tubs or direct pool access in some. Two restaurants serve Japanese, Thai, and Western cuisines, plus free buffet breakfasts that receive great reviews. Also on-site are a dive center and two swimming pools, one for relaxation and the other mostly used for diving lessons. Travelers looking to stay right on Sairee Beach should compare rates at the Koh Tao Cabana, which has a spa and villas with rustic-chic decor.

Koh Samui Resort
78/2 - 19 M.5

Koh Samui Resort is a small value property that sits off the beaten path along peaceful Bang Po Beach. This is one of the island's least developed areas, though there's not much to do in the immediate area beyond the beach. There are only 20 simple, but relatively modern, bungalows set in a tropical garden around a small swimming pool. The restaurant and beach are across the small street which runs through the property. It feels something like the Samui of old, with a long sweep of sand and no beach vendors, jet skis, or other major development. However, guests looking for a simple beach escape at good value will appreciate this spot, which is much quieter than places like the sleeker Smile House Resort back east in Bo Phut

The COAST Koh Samui - Adults Only Resort and Spa
44/134, Moo 1, Maenam Beach

The COAST Koh Samui - Adults Only Resort and Spa is an upscale beachfront hotel with a stylish contemporary aesthetic and an excellent range of facilities. The hotel is set along a picturesque white-sand beach in Mae Nam, a sleepy town located a 10-minute drive from Fisherman's Village. The 125 suites and villas have elegantly styled interiors, balconies, luxe amenities, and comfy furniture. The Beach Pool Villas feature ocean views, direct beach access, and private plunge pools. Facilities include a large swimming pool with a swim-up bar, a multi-cuisine restaurant, a cocktail lounge, a fitness center, and a spa. As an alternative, check out the Zazen Boutique Resort & Spa with traditional Thai stylings, an excellent restaurant with ocean views, and a more central location -- but higher rates.

Mantra Samui Resort
9/123-124 Moo1

Mantra Samui Resort is an upscale, hillside resort in northern Samui with amazing ocean views. The tranquil location is fairly isolated, but Bophut's white-sand beaches and the vibrant streets of Fisherman's Village are less than a 15-minute drive away. The hotel features 88 stylish modern rooms and suites and has an excellent range of facilities. Rooms have a fresh contemporary look, include balcony seating areas, and many offer ocean views. The hotel's most attractive facility is a large infinity swimming pool that sits suspended over the edge of a cliff. A multi-cuisine restaurant, a full-service spa and gym, and a co-working lounge are also on offer. Freebies include breakfast, Wi-Fi, and shuttles to Chaweng Beach. Guests who'd prefer to stay directly on the beach may want to consider Sensimar Koh Samui -- a chic and contemporary adult-only resort.

Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui Thailand
219 Moo 5

The Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui Thailand is arguably the fanciest place to stay on the island. All 71 of the rooms are private villas, and each has its own private pool. Private Residence Villas add perks such as round-trip airport transfers and personal live-in attendants. The facilities are also unabashedly luxe, with multiple restaurants serving Thai and Mediterranean fare, a lovely main infinity pool looking out on the white-sand beach, and extensive wellness facilities, from a 24-hour gym to a spa offering all sorts of treatments and yoga classes. There are few other properties on the island that can compete with the Four Seasons. For beachfront luxury with lower rates, check out the Santiburi Beach Resort & Spa
