Hotel Riu Tikida Palmeraie
Route Fes, Km 6

ClubHotel Riu Tikida Palmeraie is an upscale, all-inclusive family-friendly resort located in the Palmeraie, about a 15-minute drive -- without traffic -- to the medina. The 388 air-conditioned rooms include Doubles, which come with mini-fridges, satellite TV, and terraces, and Junior Suites, with living room areas and sofa beds. Packed with activities, the resort includes indoor and outdoor swimming pools with a poolside bar (the all-inclusive package includes unlimited alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks), a kids' club and pool, three restaurants, a sun terrace, a gym, a spa with traditional hammam, whirlpool and massages, a sports center, tennis courts, nightly entertainment, even an art program. Spread out over a large palm grove, the modern resort was built in the adobe style, and decorative Moroccan touches punctuate its rooms and sprawling interior. It's not exactly an intimate, quiet riad filled with authentic charm and color, but it's a good choice for travelers seeking an all-inclusive vacation experience outside the Marrakech hubbub but still within easy reach of the Red City's sights.

Hôtel Sofitel Agadir Thalassa Sea & Spa
Baie des Palmiers

This 173-room upscale hotel has a quiet beachfront location just south of Agadir's promenade. Contemporary design includes quirky modern furnishings, and all rooms feature free Wi-Fi, minibars, and furnished balconies, some with ocean-facing views. However, many rooms are quite compact. There are two outdoor pools surrounded by cozy cabanas, a private beach with water sports, plus a small fitness center, and outdoor tennis court. The thalassotherapy spa offers massage treatments and a hot tub, but the hammam costs extra. For dining, there are three restaurants serving international cuisines, plus healthy options and themed meals. Unfortunately, the breakfast buffet costs extra and is expensive. Travelers looking for a more laid-back vibe should try the Sofitel Agadir Royal Bar Resort next door, which adds a nightclub and live music.

Movenpick Hotel Casablanca
Rond Point Hassan II

The 184-room Moevenpick Hotel Casablanca is an upscale property with competitive rates and a central location in the business district. The hotel’s rooftop area is packed with great amenities, including a small but lovely pool, a bar with a sushi menu, a fitness center, and a spa. The main restaurant serves Moroccan and international cuisine in a stylish dining room with a black and white color scheme, and XO Lounge has live music several times a week. Spacious rooms feature contemporary decor in a black, white, and red color palette and offer minibars and free Wi-Fi (though some complain of spotty service). Guests should note that lower-floor units may get traffic noise. Travelers seeking something closer to the Old Medina might want to consider the Hyatt Regency Casablanca or the Sofitel Casablanca Tour Blanche.

Club Val d'Anfa Hotel
Angle Bd de l'Ocean Atlantique et Bd de la Corniche, Ain Diab

Located 50 yards from the beach and Atlantic Ocean, Club Val d'Anfa Hotel is situated in the vibrant La Corniche area of Casablanca, with its restaurants, bars, and nightclubs. While not a truly upscale property like Casablanca's Sofitel or Hyatt Regency, this upper-middle-range hotel has a distinctive Moroccan character throughout its interiors. Housed in two buildings, the 137 rooms feature flat-screen TVs and free Wi-Fi, and some rooms have ocean views. An outdoor freeform pool, massage treatments (for a fee), a sauna, Turkish steam rooms, several restaurants, and a nightclub with belly dancing add a resort vibe here, though Wi-Fi can be spotty, the breakfast buffet isn't free, and some rooms could use renovating.

Atlas Sky Airport
Zone Urbaine Nouaceur

The 150-room, upper-middle-range Atlas Sky is a solid choice for travelers seeking a comfortable stay near the airport. A free airport shuttle runs every 30 minutes (five-minute ride), while on-site guests can make use of the outdoor pool, elegant spa facilities, or multiple restaurant and bars. Attractive and contemporary rooms have mini-fridges, flat-screen TVs, and kettles, but guests have reported noise both from planes and adjacent rooms due to thin walls. Another downside is that there's no gym on-site. The hotel shares facilities with the Hotel Relax Airport next door, so it's worth comparing rates.

Hotel le Caspien
12 Rue Lobnane, Gueliz

This 36-room, three-pearl hotel offers a modern take on the ancient city. Meshing Moroccan motifs with a boutique flavor, Le Caspian presents a remarkable amount of amenities for its small size, including multiple restaurants, a rooftop bar, and even a small pool. The guest rooms and suites also come with a bit of panache, such as stucco cornices, carved wooden doors, traditional mosaic tile floors, and often balconies. Although a mile outside the medina, the hotel is still within walking distance of more than a few major attractions and parks, but a bus or taxi is needed to reach most others. Shoppers will love being next to the vast Carre Eden Shopping Centre, not to mention a host of upscale cafes, art galleries, and fashion boutiques. Travelers looking for a step up nearby can consider Hotel Diwane.

Hotel Chems
Avenue Hommane Al Fetouaki

Hotel Chems is a mid-range,145-room resort-style property located at the southern end of the medina, about a two-minute walk to the Koutoubia mosque and a 15-minute walk to Djemaa el Fna square -- the bustling heart of the Old City. While the hotel shows its age in places, rooms are well-maintained, and the garden and large swimming pool -- a rarity in the medina -- provide fine places to unwind in the sun. There's a massage room and a traditional hammam, along with tennis and petanque courts. The restaurant serves a buffet-style lunch and dinner, but there's plenty of places to eat within walking distance. The Chems is a good choice for budget-conscious travelers who want a pool, and who want to be within walking distance of the Old City's sights but not right in the thick of the bustle. This interested in a riad experience can find some in the medina for similar or even cheaper prices -- such as Riad Tamarrakecht or Riad les Orangers d'Alilia Marrakech -- though neither have a large pool.

Iberostar Founty Beach
City Founty B.P 1039, Cite Founty

The Iberostar Founty Beach is an upscale beachfront resort with well-tended grounds and a large outdoor pool complex. The 470 rooms are spacious and mostly bland, though they do have balconies and some sea views. There are extra charges for safes and deposits required for pool towels. All rates include a free breakfast buffet, and there are half-board and all-inclusive packages for the restaurants and bars. Facilities include a small gym, spa with an indoor pool, sauna, three kids’ clubs, and two tennis courts, plus live entertainment. Parking is free, but the free Wi-Fi can be patchy in rooms, and some rooms are far from facilities. The similarly priced Sofitel Agadir Royal Bay Resort has more modern rooms and offers water sports.

Sofitel Essaouira Mogador Golf & Spa
Domaine Mogador

Located a short drive from Essaouira’s medina, the beautiful Sofitel is a quiet retreat catering to golfers, couples, and families alike. It has all the luxury amenities expected of a five-pearl resort, including two wonderful outdoor pools, an 18-hole golf course, an upscale spa, and four restaurants serving excellent food. Rooms are colorful, stylish and high-tech, with furnished terraces offering panoramic views, luxurious bathrooms with separate soaking tubs, and free Wi-Fi. Villas are set in their own private gardens complete with heated pools and spacious wooden decks with daybeds. All units are luxurious and comfortable, though some pieces of furniture are starting to show some wear and tear. Travelers seeking something smaller and with more local character may want to consider Le Jardin des Douars.

Riad Alnadine
3 Derb Hajjama, Quartier Ben Salah

Riad Alnadine is a simple, pretty guesthouse located down one of the narrow alleys in the medina. The three-and-a-half-pearl property is close to souks and touristy Jemaa el-Fna Square, but isolated enough to have a quiet, local vibe. A traditional open courtyard has a small plunge pool and the rooftop terrace above is large enough for guests to spread out for breakfast or sunbathe on loungers. Facilities are limited, and no hammam is perhaps the biggest drawback. The hotel's six guest rooms are elegantly decorated, but they lack modern amenities like TVs, mini-fridges, and kettles. Perks include free breakfast and personal loaner GPS devices for navigating the medina. Travelers who want something more upscale can consider Riad Houdou, which adds a restaurant and spa.
