Strawberry Hill
New Castle Road B1

This former coffee plantation nestled among the steep and winding hills of Jamaica’s famous Blue Mountain is a little oasis above the very un-resort-like city of Kingston. The resort offers plenty of intimacy and privacy, with just 12 cottages on more than 26 acres. It also has the features of a larger property: an expansive spa, a breezy restaurant and bar, a hilltop pool with panoramic vistas, lush gardens, and ample relaxation space. Rates might be considered a steal given the property's level of luxury -- if it weren’t for the inaccessible location and lack of beachfront.

The Chesterfield Mayfair
35 Charles Street, Mayfair

The Chesterfield Mayfair is part of the Red Carnation Hotel Collection. This 107-room hotel has traditional Victorian decor, including a grand chandelier in the lobby and portraits on the walls. While rooms are classically decorated with floral patterns, they have modern conveniences as well, including free Wi-Fi, big flat-screen TVs, and 24-hour room service. Highlights at this charming property include a great breakfast with wide selection of hot and cold dishes, a fine dining restaurant, and a terrace bar.

The Tower Hotel
St Katharine's Way

The Tower is a modern, upper-middle-range business property located on the Thames, right next to Tower Bridge. Its 801 rooms are starting to look a bit dated for a hotel of this caliber, and there have been complaints about cleanliness and maintenance issues. Though it's a bit unpolished in places, the hotel does have a restaurant, a bar, and 19 fully equipped meeting rooms. There's also a lovely terrace with great views. While the location is great for business travelers wanting access to the City of London, tourists may be better off staying somewhere closer to West End attractions. The Grosvenor Hotel is a good alternative and it's located near Buckingham Palace.

Montreal Marriott Chateau Champlain
1050 de la Gauchetiere West

The upper-middle-range Marriott Chateau Champlain has a few things to recommend it: First, it's solidly good Downtown location, right by Place du Canada and connected to the city's underground. Second, the view from its guest rooms, a truly staggering panorama of the city. And finally the sheer amount of meeting space on offer. On the downside, the hotel is massively outdated, with throwback '80s decor that feels stuffy and faded. For travelers that can overlook its appearance, the property does offer an indoor pool, full gym, and on-site dining, in addition to 611 rooms equipped with coffeemakers, flat-screen TVs, and mini-fridges. However, it suffers when compared to the Marriott's newest venture: the AC Hotel, which upgrades just about everything with chic decor, a pool and gym on a higher floor, and better amenities, plus the trusted Marriott name.

Melia White House
Albany Street, Regent's Park

Despite being a chain hotel, Melia White House stands out from the norm with an impressive Art Deco building and polished, stylish interiors. Situated next to central London's Regent Park, the hotel is relatively peaceful, yet within walking distance of many of the capital's attractions. Dining options are particularly impressive, with award-winning fine dining and an emphasis on healthy eating. Rooms are smart and perfectly well-equipped, though some are a little cramped. Travelers who want more space for their money could try the Go Native Apartments, just a block away.

Hotel Clarendon
57, Rue Sainte-Anne

The historic 143-room Hotel Clarendon is an upper-middle-range property with Art Deco Art Nouveau accents in the heart of Old Quebec. Modern rooms with vintage flare have Keurig coffeemakers, flat-screen TVs, and marvelous views of Old Quebec, and some have iPod docks and bathrooms with separate walk-in showers and jetted tubs. The on-site restaurant and Jazz Bar receive good reviews, but there is often a cover charge to attend the live music performances. On-site parking also incurs a fee as well and there is no fitness center. Guests looking for amenities like a fitness center and spa services may want to consider Auberge Saint-Antoine, an upscale choice in Old Quebec, though rates will be higher.

Hotel Omni Mont-Royal
1050 Sherbrooke St. W.

The Omni Mont-Royal Hotel is an upscale, cosmopolitan high-rise hotel with a downtown location near McGill University and Mount Royal Park, with lots of restaurants, shops, and attractions close by. It offers 299 elegant and spacious rooms and suites with amenities that include flat-screen TVs, iPod docks, minibars, and lovely marble bathrooms. Property highlights include a restaurant and bar, seasonal outdoor pool, and a well-equipped fitness center. There are 14 meeting rooms on-site catering to various events, plus a full-service spa for those seeking a dose of pampering. However, parking and Wi-Fi incur steep fees, as does breakfast, and street noise can be an issue in some rooms. Travelers might also want to consider the nearby Hotel Le Germain Montreal, which offers free Wi-Fi and continental breakfast.

The Rembrandt
11 Thurloe Place, Knightsbridge

The Rembrandt Hotel is an upscale hotel located in the tourist-friendly area of South Kensington, a short walk from a handful of museums, galleries, and other sights. The stylish, modern hotel has 193 rooms with colorful decor and high-tech amenities, such as interactive TVs. The numerous property features include a full bar, lounge, and restaurant; guests also get discounted day passes to the gym, heated pool, jacuzzi, and sauna at the adjacent Aquilla Health and Fitness.

One King West Hotel & Residence
1 King Street West, King & Yonge

The 370-room upscale One King West Hotel & Residence is an all-suite hotel converted from Toronto's historic Dominion Bank building. The hotel retains much of the landmark's early 19th-century character, architecture, and grand atmosphere, including an event space by the original bank vault. Contemporary and handsome guest rooms have flat-screen TVs and kitchenettes with microwaves and two-burner stoves. There are an on-site restaurant, cafe, and bar, but its excellent downtown location means there are plenty other options in the immediate area. A bright fitness center, sauna, and whirlpool are added perks, but there's a fee for in-room Wi-Fi and parking. Families with young children might find One King West too business-oriented and should check out the Hilton Toronto, which has a full-size indoor and outdoor pool.

River Rock Casino Resort
8811 River Rd

Less expensive than many high-end downtown Vancouver hotels, this upscale property offers a genuine (though somewhat Las Vegas-like) resort experience. Ideal for travelers of all sorts – business, international, couples, or families – this place has it all. Kids love the waterslide attached to the pool, and the jungle motif. Fun-loving adults can gamble, dine at upscale or casual restaurants, use the huge gym, or unwind in one of the spa's six private treatment rooms. There's live music four nights per week at Lulu's Lounge, plus the Show Theater with big-name acts regularly. There are plenty of meeting rooms, banquet halls, and conference facilities available. The attached SkyTrain station provides super-quick access to both the airport and downtown Vancouver. The place is great for relaxation (and potentially, moneymaking or breaking), an oasis all its own but also well-connected to Vancouver.
